Here is a list of websites that provide an online virus scan service that checks uploaded files for malware using anti-virus engines. All of these services are absolutely free!
1. VirusTotal: uses 39 AV engines. This service has an excellent detection rate! It gives detailed results from each AV engine and provides real time global statistics. Note: VirusTotal also has an uploader program (140KB) that automatically sends files to VirusTotal without you opening your web browser. 20 MB file size limit.
2. Jotti's Malware Scan: uses 19 AV engines. 20 MB file size limit.
3. NoVirusThanks: uses 24 AV engines. 20 MB file size limit. Note: NoVirusThanks also has an uploader program that directly sends suspicious files from your PC to their multi-engine AV scanner.
4. Kaspersky File Scanner: updates every three hours to ensure that even the very newest viruses can be detected. 1 MB file size limit.
5. Virus.org: uses 18 AV engines. 5 MB file size limit.
6. Dr. Web Virus Scan: your files are immediately scanned by the latest version of Dr.Web anti-virus with the most recent virus definitions loaded.
7. VirSCAN: uses 36 AV engines. 20 MB file size limit.
8. FortiGuard: uses FortiClient AV engine. 1 MB file size limit. (Results by email)
9. VirusChief: uses 13 AV engines. 10 MB file size limit.
10. avast! Online Scanner: uses avast! AV engine. 512kb file size limit.
11. Filterbit: uses 6 AV engines. 20 MB file size limit.
12. Comodo Instant Malware Analysis: once the file is submitted, COMODO Automated Analysis System will scan it and report back its findings.
Analyze file behavior:
The following services analyze your submitted files on a test (sandbox) system and then sends you a report on what it saw.
1. Sunbelt CWSandbox: 12288 KB file size limit. (Results by email)
2. Anubis: Analyzing Unknown Binaries: 8 MB file size limit. (The file must be a Windows executable.)
3. WEPAWET: detects and analyzes web-based malware. It currently handles Flash, JavaScript, and PDF files.
4. ThreatExpert: 5 MB file size limit. (Results by email) Note: ThreatExpert also has a stand-alone tool (944KB) that provides you with a quick way to submit your samples without using your browser.
5. Norman Sandbox: results by email.
6. Joebox: analyzes malware to capture its runtime behaviour data. 12MB file size limit. (Results by email)
7. Autovin: analyzes the behavior of Windows executables. 5MB file size limit. (Results by email)
